Broken Key Stuck in a Lock or Ignition
A key breaking in a lock or ignition almost always means the lock or the key was worn — and force finished the job. The fix is straightforward when handled by a locksmith, but risky when handled with pliers.
Why keys break
- Worn cylinder pins that stick as the key turns
- Bent or thinned keys from years of use

What to do — and not do
Do: stop turning, don't insert anything else into the cylinder, take a photo of the situation and call a locksmith.
Don't: try to jam another key in behind the broken piece, don't spray oil-based lubricants (they trap grit), and don't force the mechanism from the other side.
How a locksmith extracts a broken key

Questions people ask
Should I try to pull it out with pliers or tweezers?
Usually no. If the broken tip is below the face of the cylinder, needle-nose pliers usually push it deeper. A locksmith uses proper extraction tools that grab and pull without damaging the pins.
Will the lock still work after extraction?
Often yes, if the cylinder wasn't damaged. Sometimes a rekey or replacement is recommended, especially if the lock was already worn — which is usually why the key broke.
Can a broken key be copied?
If both halves are recovered and readable, yes. If only part of the key remains, a locksmith may be able to cut a new key by code from the lock itself.
