Key Won't Turn in the Lock — What's Wrong?
A key that won't turn is usually one of four things: a worn key, a worn cylinder, a misaligned door or a stuck steering column. Here's how to tell which — before you force it and break something.
Common causes on residential locks
- Worn key: shiny, thin edges, from years of daily use
- Worn pins inside the cylinder
- Door out of alignment — the deadbolt binds against the strike plate
- Grit or dust in the cylinder (Amarillo spring storms are notorious)
- Cold weather stiffening old lubricants
Common causes on vehicle ignitions
- Steering wheel locked against the ignition — jiggle the wheel while turning the key
- Worn ignition cylinder, common on older Ford and GM trucks
- Wrong or worn key — try a spare
- Transponder issue on newer vehicles: the key turns but nothing happens
Safe things to try
Try a spare key. Try turning the deadbolt while pulling or pushing the door slightly (fixes many strike alignment issues). For vehicles, turn the steering wheel side-to-side while gently turning the key. Do not spray oil-based lubricant. If none of that works, stop before the key snaps.
When to call a locksmith

Try a spare, if you have one. If the spare turns and the original doesn't, the key is worn. If neither works, the lock or cylinder is likely the problem.
Can I use WD-40?
It's not ideal. WD-40 is a solvent that dries out and eventually attracts dust — a common problem in Amarillo's climate. A dry graphite or PTFE lock lubricant is safer. When in doubt, leave it and call a locksmith.
Will forcing it break the key?
